The Community Manager

#CmgrChat 5/18 – SEO, Link Building, & Blogger Outreach

May 20, 2011
Judi Huck

Co-moderators Jenn Pedde and Alexa Scordato clocked 686 tweets at this week’s #cmgrchat. The topic was a hot one: SEO, Linkbuilding, and Blogger Outreach and that certainly brought a lot of visitors, including new grads.

In the spirit of the popular “+1” and algorithms –don’t let that word scare you– this digest was done a little differently and ranked by the number of amplifications. Beneath each of the included responses is a value showing how many RTs the response evoked. Enjoy.

______

Q1. Linkbuilding vs. Blogger Relations – Should they be treated as separate activities or are they one in the same?

tamcdonald: Link building does not create relationships. Creating relationships creates link building.

+16

SeanMcGinnis Know what creates the best blogger outreach? Being human.

+5

ottogrl Trying 2 find a commonality (outside of the #sm space) helps create a strong relationship w/ bloggers

+3

AdamBritten:  Relations seems to fit more into community building, whereas link building is more SEO

+2

JasonKeath: Linkbuilding & Blogger OR are different tasks, but as w/ many things, blogger outreach creates link benefits

+2

______

Q2. Many CMs focus on metrics like engagement & reach. How much emphasis do you place on#SEO?

JPedde: A person who gets social & SEO will be a force. Targeted keywords + ppl skills = power

+24

RachelYeomans: Everyone in social shd know a LITTLE bit abt SEO just for Meta descriptions & headlines for search engines, etc
+5

BlogDash: Most community managers wear a shit ton of hats. SEO should probably be one of them if they’re creating content.
+3

tmonhollon Also think important to pay attn to Bing now. They are really building around social, becoming bigger player
+3

tamcdonald: Understanding how to most effectively post to various channels to achieve desired results is imperative for SEO
+2

rhogroupee: I know just enough about SEO to be dangerous 🙂
+2

_____

Q3. Have you ever been pitched to place a link on your site? If so, what was your reaction? Do you do a lot of pitching yourself?

Alexa: Linkbuilding pitch = one night stand. Good blogger outreach = long, committed relationship.#justlikedating
+12

tamcdonald: A3: No need to pitch when you have built a relationship. Just ask.
+6

rhogroupee I think guest posting is more effective than link request anyway
+6

JPedde: Blogger Outreach. Who knew it was so much work. As @Alexa says, its like dating.
+4

BlogDash: A pitch shouldn’t be a request for a link, it should be an opportunity for a story.
+3

jessicamalnik Here’s probably the most awkward blog pitch I’ve seen.http://ow.ly/4XBHT
+3

BlogDash: We match bloggers and brands based on 29 degrees of compatibility.
+3

______

Q4. Your company is on the second page of Google. Your boss wants to be on the first. Reasonable ask or above & beyond?

BlogDash: “Community Manager” has become a very broad term. The roles have to be clearly defined within that term
+4

bluephoenixnyc: At the end of the day, cmgrs are the gatekeepers–so they need to keep learning. theres never “enough info”
+4

BlogDash: Unless, as the community manager, you have clearly defined your role, your boss can ask you to do anything.
+3

*There was a lot of variance in response to this question — is it reasonable or is it unreasonable for a boss to ask this of his/her community manager. More education may be necessary to better answer the question, so here are the top recommended resources from this week’s SEO chat:
